In most engineering papers, the 100 marks are divided into General Aptitude 15, Engineering Mathematics 13 and branch subjects 72. Papers such as DA, CY, MA, PH, RA, ST, XH and XL follow their own published distribution without the standard 13-mark Engineering Mathematics split.

General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics
General Aptitude gives 15 marks in all 30 papers. Engineering Mathematics is also a major scoring block in most conventional engineering papers.
General Aptitude
Prepare verbal aptitude, sentence completion, reading comprehension, numerical computation, ratios, percentages, data interpretation, logic and spatial aptitude.
Engineering Mathematics
The exact syllabus varies by paper. Common areas include linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability, statistics, numerical methods and transforms.
Computer Science and Information Technology
CS preparation needs a balanced mix of Mathematics, programming, systems, theory and problem solving. Completing only DSA or only college subjects will leave major GATE areas uncovered.

C programming, data structures, algorithms, complexity, searching, sorting, trees, graphs and hashing.
Systems
Digital logic, computer organisation, operating systems, databases and computer networks.
Theory and Mathematics

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

These papers share Mathematics, circuits, signals, control and parts of digital electronics, but their high-weight technical areas are different.
Common Base

EC Focus
Electronic devices, analogue circuits, communications, electromagnetics and digital circuits.
EE and IN Focus
Electrical machines, power systems, power electronics, measurements, sensors and process control.
Mechanical, Production and Engineering Sciences
Mechanical candidates need thermal, design and manufacturing groups. PI adds production and industrial depth, while XE uses a common Mathematics section plus selected optional sections.
Thermal and Fluids
Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, applications and power cycles.
Design and Mechanics
Engineering mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, vibrations and machine design.
Production and Industrial
Manufacturing, materials, metrology, operations research, inventory, quality and work systems.
Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering
Civil has structural, geotechnical, water, transportation and environmental blocks. ES and GE need separate official syllabi even when some topics overlap with Civil.

Robotics and Automation: New in GATE 2027
Robotics and Automation is a new GATE paper. It contains a common Part A and an optional Part B1 Electrical or Part B2 Mechanical section selected during the examination.

Common Mistakes in YouTube-Based GATE Preparation
Old lectures may still teach concepts well, but their sequence may not reflect GATE 2027 additions or changes.
A strong CSE channel may not be suitable for Power Systems, Geotechnical Engineering or Chemical Processes.
GATE tests application and analysis. Familiar explanations do not guarantee independent problem solving.
