SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Qualification and Final-Year Student Rules
Check the rule that applies to your post, date of birth and graduation status before you assume that you are eligible.
Many students read only one line—“graduation is required”—and assume they can apply for every SSC CGL post. The confusion starts later, when they notice that one post has an upper age of 27, another has 30, Junior Statistical Officer goes up to 32, and some posts need an extra subject or language condition.
The final-year rule creates even more doubt. Appearing in the last semester and possessing the required qualification by the official cut-off date are not the same thing. This guide explains the SSC CGL eligibility criteria in a way that helps you check your own case step by step.
For most SSC CGL 2026 posts, you need a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an accepted equivalent qualification. The age limit is post-specific and falls under 18–27, 20–30, 18–30 or 18–32 years. Final-year students can apply, but their qualifying result must be officially declared on or before 1 August 2026. Age, qualification and supporting documents are checked together, so passing one condition does not make you eligible for every post.
Nationality and Citizenship Requirement
A candidate must fall under one of the citizenship categories mentioned in the SSC CGL 2026 notice. For most students this is simple, but candidates belonging to specified non-Indian categories should check the certificate condition before applying.
- A citizen of India.
- A subject of Nepal.
- A subject of Bhutan.
- A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates covered by the Nepal, Bhutan or specified person-of-Indian-origin categories need a Government of India eligibility certificate. They may be allowed to take the examination, but an appointment offer is given only after the required certificate is issued.
SSC CGL Age Limit and Date-of-Birth Range
SSC CGL does not have one maximum age for all posts. First select the post, then check the age band attached to it. For the 2026 examination, age is counted as on 1 August 2026—not on the Tier 1 date, application date or document-verification date.
| Age band | Minimum age | Maximum age | Permitted date-of-birth range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18–27 years | 18 years | 27 years | Born from 2 August 1999 to 1 August 2008 |
| 20–30 years | 20 years | 30 years | Born from 2 August 1996 to 1 August 2006 |
| 18–30 years | 18 years | 30 years | Born from 2 August 1996 to 1 August 2008 |
| 18–32 years | 18 years | 32 years | Born from 2 August 1994 to 1 August 2008 |
The boundary dates shown above come from the SSC CGL 2026 notice. Category relaxation may extend the upper age, but it normally does not reduce the minimum age.
Important Posts Under Each Age Band
The table below groups the major posts listed in the 2026 notification. Read the complete post table in the official notice before filling your preference because SSC may update vacancies or post details.

If one age band does not suit you, it does not automatically mean that every government exam is closed. You can compare the age and syllabus overlap in this guide to government exams with a similar syllabus.
SSC CGL Age Relaxation by Category
Age relaxation applies to the upper limit when a candidate satisfies the category conditions and can produce the prescribed certificate. It should not be treated as an automatic benefit only because a category was selected in the form.
General Age Relaxation
| Category | Relaxation beyond upper age | What the student should check |
|---|---|---|
| SC/ST | 5 years | Valid category certificate in the prescribed form |
| OBC | 3 years | Central-list status and the certificate conditions in the notice |
| PwBD | 10 years | Post suitability and valid disability certificate |
| PwBD with OBC | 13 years | Both disability and OBC requirements |
| PwBD with SC/ST | 15 years | Both disability and SC/ST requirements |
| Ex-Servicemen | 3 years after deducting eligible military service from actual age | ESM status, service period and supporting documents |
| Defence personnel disabled in operation | 3 years | Conditions stated in the official notice |
| Defence personnel disabled in operation, SC/ST | 8 years | Conditions stated in the official notice |
Additional Relaxation for Specified Group C Posts
| Eligible category | Additional condition | Maximum age |
|---|---|---|
| Central Government civilian employee | At least 3 years of regular and continuous service as on the closing date | Up to 40 years |
| Central Government civilian employee, SC/ST | At least 3 years of regular and continuous service as on the closing date | Up to 45 years |
| Widow, divorced woman or judicially separated woman | Must not have remarried | Up to 35 years |
| Same women’s category with SC/ST status | Must not have remarried and must satisfy SC/ST certificate rules | Up to 40 years |
These additional limits are for specified Group C posts. The application window was reopened and the closing date was revised to 25 June 2026, so candidates relying on a closing-date condition should read the later SSC notice as well.
For an 18–27 post, an eligible OBC candidate can get 3 years of upper-age relaxation, making the relaxed upper limit 30. The minimum age remains 18.
For an 18–30 post, an eligible SC/ST candidate can get 5 years of upper-age relaxation, making the relaxed upper limit 35.
If actual age is 36 and eligible military service is 8 years, the adjusted age is 28. For a post ending at 27, the ESM rule allows up to 30 after service deduction. Final eligibility still depends on valid ESM status and documents.
SSC CGL Educational Qualification by Post
For most SSC CGL posts, the qualification rule is simple: a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an accepted equivalent qualification. BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BTech and other recognized bachelor’s degree holders can apply for general posts, subject to the exact post conditions.
The mistake happens when students apply the general rule to JSO, Statistical Investigator or State Cadre audit and accounts posts. Those posts have extra conditions that must be checked separately.
A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an accepted equivalent qualification is required.
For Assistant Audit Officer, Central Cadre, a bachelor’s degree is essential. CA, CMA, Company Secretary, MCom, Masters in Business Studies, MBA Finance or Masters in Business Economics are desirable qualifications.
You need a bachelor’s degree in any subject with at least 60% marks in Mathematics at Class 12 level, or a bachelor’s degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.
The 2026 notice lists bachelor’s degrees in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Demography, Population Studies, Operation Research, Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Technology, Computer Application, Data Science or Artificial Intelligence from a recognized university or institute.
After confirming the post for which your degree is valid, you can choose subject resources from the SSC CGL YouTube channel preparation guide.
Can Final-Year Students Apply for SSC CGL 2026?
This is where students should read the wording carefully. Completing your final examination before the deadline is not enough if the university has not declared your result. A result shown as “under process” on 1 August does not meet the educational qualification condition.
Your final result was officially declared on 31 July 2026 and you passed. You can prove the result date and meet the post’s other requirements.
Your final examination ended in July, but the university declared the result on 2 August 2026. Finishing the exam earlier does not replace the result-date condition.
Your result was declared before 1 August but the provisional certificate came later. Keep official evidence showing the result declaration date and confirm the acceptable proof with SSC or the user department.
Five Student Cases Explained Simply
These are explanatory examples, not official decisions on an individual application. Use them to understand the rule, then compare your documents with the SSC notice.
| Student situation | Likely eligibility | Reason | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| BA final-year student whose result was declared passed on 30 July 2026 | Likely eligible for general posts | Result was declared before the qualification cut-off | Result proof, degree recognition, age and exact post |
| BTech student who completed exams in July but received the result on 3 August 2026 | Not eligible for 2026 under the qualification cut-off | The result was declared after 1 August 2026 | Any later official SSC clarification or corrigendum |
| BCom graduate with 55% in Class 12 Mathematics and no Statistics at degree level | Not eligible for JSO through the stated routes; may be eligible for general posts | Neither JSO-specific route is met | Degree subjects and the chosen general post |
| OBC candidate aged 29 on 1 August 2026 applying for an 18–27 post | Likely within relaxed age | Three-year OBC relaxation can extend the upper limit to 30 | Valid OBC claim, Central-list status and certificate conditions |
| Distance BCA graduate from a programme recognized for the relevant study period | Likely eligible for general posts | A recognized bachelor’s degree can satisfy the general qualification | University, programme, mode and DEB/UGC recognition period |
Distance Degrees, Equivalence and Documents
SSC accepts an application provisionally. This means the application form may be accepted without a full eligibility check at that stage, but the claim can still be rejected later if the supporting documents do not match.
A distance-learning bachelor’s degree may be accepted when the university and programme were recognized for the relevant academic period. Do not assume that every online or distance programme is valid only because the university exists.
- Check the university and programme approval.
- Check recognition for the years in which you studied.
- Keep Distance Education Bureau or UGC approval proof when required.
- Professional programmes may have additional regulatory conditions.
If you claim that your qualification is equivalent to the degree mentioned by SSC, keep an equivalence certificate from the competent authority. The concerned user department or appointing authority makes the final decision on such a claim.
- Do not rely only on a college statement.
- Match the exact post requirement.
- Keep the original equivalence document.
- Check whether equivalence is allowed for that post.
Documents You May Need at Verification
- Graduation marksheets for all years or semesters.
- Provisional certificate or degree certificate.
- Official result evidence showing that you passed by the cut-off date.
- Matriculation or secondary certificate showing your date of birth.
- Category, PwBD, ESM or other relaxation certificate, where claimed.
- DEB/UGC recognition proof for a relevant distance-learning qualification.
- Equivalence certificate, where an equivalent qualification is claimed.
- Regional or official language proficiency certificate for relevant State Cadre posts.
Common SSC CGL Eligibility Mistakes
After checking eligibility, avoid losing preparation time through poor planning, too many resources or weak mock analysis. This guide explains the common mistakes students make in SSC CGL preparation and how to correct them early.
SSC CGL Eligibility: Myth Versus Fact
Age and Graduation Are Not the Only Conditions
Some Inspector and Sub-Inspector posts carry separate physical, medical or post-specific standards. These checks may be conducted by the concerned user department after the result. A candidate who gives a high preference to a post but later fails its specific standard may not simply receive another preferred post.
Complete This Checklist Before Applying
Do not tick these points in a hurry. Match each one with the official notice and your own documents.
What to Do After Confirming Eligibility
Once your eligibility is clear, first match your preparation with the complete SSC CGL Tier 1 and Tier 2 syllabus. This helps you avoid spending time on topics that are outside the current exam structure.
Next, create a realistic schedule with the SSC CGL study plan generator and test your progress through the subject-wise and topic-wise SSC CGL mock tests.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a final-year student apply for SSC CGL 2026?
Yes, a candidate who has appeared in the final year can submit the application, but the required qualification and result must be officially declared on or before 1 August 2026. If the result is declared later, the candidate does not meet this qualification rule for SSC CGL 2026.
What happens if my graduation result is declared after 1 August 2026?
You do not meet the educational qualification cut-off for SSC CGL 2026, even if your final examination was held earlier or the result was under processing. Check any later official SSC corrigendum, but do not assume that an awaited result will be accepted.
Is 60% required in graduation for SSC CGL?
No, most general SSC CGL posts do not prescribe 60% in graduation. The well-known 60% condition relates to Mathematics at Class 12 level under one qualification route for Junior Statistical Officer, not to graduation marks for every post.
Is a distance-learning degree valid for SSC CGL?
A distance-learning bachelor’s degree may be valid when the university and programme were properly recognized for the relevant academic period. Keep the required DEB or UGC recognition proof and check whether the particular programme had any mode-related restriction.
Is there any limit on the number of SSC CGL attempts?
The SSC CGL 2026 notice does not prescribe a separate fixed attempt limit. A candidate may apply again while satisfying the post-wise age limit, educational qualification and all other eligibility conditions for that examination cycle.
Do Not Check SSC CGL Eligibility from One Line
The safest way to confirm your SSC CGL eligibility is to check it in the same order every time:
- Open the latest official SSC CGL notice.
- Find the exact post you want.
- Match its age band with your date of birth.
- Check the general or post-specific degree condition.
- Confirm that your result and certificates were valid by the required date.
Eligibility is checked post-wise and document-wise. If your case depends on equivalence, a disputed result date, a special category or a post-specific standard, take written guidance from SSC or the concerned authority instead of depending only on a general internet answer.
