My Resume Has Skills, But Why Am I Not Shortlisted?
A fresher writes Java, Python, C++, SQL, cloud, AI and full-stack development in the skills section. The resume has four copied projects, a generic objective and no clear personal contribution. The NextStep form shows a different percentage and graduation date.
This TCS resume guide for freshers explains why more keywords do not automatically create a strong profile. Every important claim should be accurate, explainable and supported by evidence.
Official TCS resume, NextStep and related India hiring pages checked on: 20 July 2026.
TCS has several hiring routes. Resume upload, editing and application-status instructions can differ. Candidate-specific portal guidance remains final.
What Official TCS Resume Guidance Actually Says
Official Guidance
- Research the role before writing.
- Avoid clutter and copied career statements.
- Highlight relevant achievements.
- Use genuine quantified results where available.
- Include credible certifications and internship projects.
- Arrange information by importance.
- Think about interview questions.
- Check dates and formatting.
- Follow submission instructions.
Practical Interpretation
- Remove unrelated information.
- Write a role-focused summary.
- Connect every skill with evidence.
- Show personal project contribution.
- Use honest dates and academic data.
- Prepare to explain every important line.
Do Not Assume
- One template is TCS approved.
- A fixed ATS score is required.
- One font guarantees selection.
- Every resume is reviewed the same way.
- A resume alone decides the shortlist.
- Invented numbers improve credibility.
Resume, NextStep Form and Documents Must Match
| Record | Main purpose | Information | When used | What must match | Common mistake | Final source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resume or CV | Summarises education, skills, projects, internships and achievements | Relevant profile information | Application and interview | Name, degree, marks, dates and experience | Treating it as a replacement for wrong portal data | Documents and official application |
| TCS NextStep Profile | Candidate registration and hiring record | Personal, academic and route information | Registration and drive application | Identity, qualification, year, marks and contact | Creating duplicate profiles for small changes | Current NextStep record and helpdesk guidance |
| Application Form | Submitted record for the recruitment process | Academic, internship, experience and drive details | Eligibility and selection stages | Resume and documents | Saving but not submitting, or missing Apply for Drive | Submitted application and current drive page |
| Academic Documents | Proof of education and eligibility | Marksheets, certificates and gap proof | Interview and verification | All declared academic data | Using unofficial calculations or inconsistent names | Original academic documents |
| Interview Answers | Explanation of resume claims | Skills, projects, internship, achievements and gaps | Interview | Every important resume statement | Writing claims the candidate cannot explain | Truthful evidence and personal contribution |
Resume percentage must match official marks, graduation year must match the application and internship dates must match proof. A different filename cannot correct wrong NextStep data.
Recommended Fresher Resume Section Order
Change the order when genuine experience deserves more importance. A candidate with a strong internship can place it above projects, while a candidate without internship should lead with education, skills and project evidence.
Resume Header and Contact Details
Full name, active mobile number and professional email.
Current city, LinkedIn and GitHub.
Full postal address, Aadhaar, PAN, parents’ names, religion, caste and marital status.
Use a simple name-based email and keep it active.
Use one reachable number and check messages regularly.
Enter route-specific personal information in the application form, not unnecessarily on the public resume.
Career Objective vs Professional Summary
| Candidate situation | Better choice | Length | Content | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech CS fresher | Professional summary | Two or three lines | Primary language, CS fundamentals and one genuine project | Listing every framework |
| BCA fresher | Professional summary | Two or three lines | Programming, DBMS, SQL and project contribution | Calling yourself a software engineer without work evidence |
| Non-CS B.Sc moving to IT | Short objective or summary | Two or three lines | Transferable reasoning, one language and proof of learning | Pretending to have advanced CS expertise |
| MCA fresher | Professional summary | Two or three lines | Highest qualification, stronger project and technical focus | Repeating BCA and MCA subjects without evidence |
| Candidate with internship | Professional summary | Three lines | Role, practical contribution and tools | Writing only the organisation name |
| Testing or support target | Professional summary | Two or three lines | Testing, SQL, troubleshooting and communication | Treating support as a temporary fallback |

How to Choose Resume Keywords
| Job-description phrase | Safe resume use | Wrong keyword stuffing |
|---|---|---|
| Java developer or Java skill | Add Java only when you used it in a project or substantial practice. | Java, Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, Kotlin expert |
| SQL or database | Mention queries, joins or schema work used in a project. | All databases known |
| Testing | Add test cases, defect reporting or validation evidence. | Software testing expert |
| REST API | Mention endpoints, JSON handling and error handling. | API, microservices, cloud, DevOps |

| Communication | Show presentation, teamwork or writing evidence. | Excellent communication |
| Git | Mention repository, commits, branches or team collaboration. | GitHub and Git as unrelated buzzwords |
Use the exact role title, language, database, testing skill, project technology or domain term only when you understand it.
Resume Design Mistakes
Should You Add a Photograph Inside the Resume?
A portal asking for a photograph does not automatically mean the photograph should appear inside the CV. Follow the exact drive instruction.
Never place Aadhaar, PAN, marksheets or other document images inside the resume. Avoid selfies and heavily edited photographs.
Resume File, Filename and Upload Check
A practical filename can be FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf, but this is not a TCS requirement.

Can the Resume Be Updated After Applying?
There is no safe universal answer. Some current TCS pages permit selected application details to be edited through Edit Application Form, while identity fields can become unavailable for change after profile creation.
Before Submission
Some routes allow a photograph or application detail to be changed before final submission.
After Submission
Editing may become limited, and the current portal status matters.
Duplicate Profile
Do not create another profile only to upload a new resume unless the official support route specifically instructs it.
Common Resume Mistakes and Practical Fixes
Generic copied objective
It adds no role-specific value.
CorrectionWrite a short summary using your degree, strongest skill and project evidence.
Limitation: A summary still does not guarantee shortlisting.
Listing every technology
It suggests shallow or inflated knowledge.
CorrectionKeep one primary language and relevant supporting tools.
Limitation: The exact role may require additional skills.
No evidence for skills
An interviewer can ask where each skill was used.
CorrectionConnect skills with projects, coursework or internship.
Limitation: Basic exposure should be labelled honestly.
Copied project
The candidate may fail simple code and architecture questions.
CorrectionRebuild a smaller original version.
Limitation: A project title alone is not proof.
No personal contribution
Team projects become impossible to verify.
CorrectionState the exact module, code, database or testing you handled.
Limitation: Do not claim the whole team’s work.
Fake internship
Dates and certificates can be checked.
CorrectionUse projects or training honestly when no internship exists.
Limitation: A paid certificate is not employment.
Unrelated certificates
They consume space without supporting the role.
CorrectionKeep only credible and relevant certificates.
Limitation: Certificate count is not a shortlist formula.
Wrong percentage
It creates document and eligibility risk.
CorrectionUse official marks and university conversion.
Limitation: A resume cannot change eligibility.
Resume and NextStep mismatch
Different records create verification problems.
CorrectionAudit every academic and identity field.
Limitation: Editing availability is route specific.
Incorrect graduation year
It may place the candidate in the wrong batch.
CorrectionMatch degree documents and application form.
Limitation: Do not use expected year after completion.
Hidden academic gap
Misleading dates can be noticed during verification.
CorrectionDeclare gaps where the application asks.
Limitation: Proof requirements can differ.
Inconsistent project dates
Unrealistic timelines reduce credibility.
CorrectionUse the real project period.
Limitation: A Git commit date is supporting, not final proof.
Duplicate profile
Multiple records can create candidature confusion.
CorrectionUse the official correction or deletion route.
Limitation: Resolution time is not guaranteed.
Unprofessional email
It weakens the first impression and can create contact errors.
CorrectionUse a simple name-based email.
Limitation: The email should remain active.
Weak filename
A random filename makes version control difficult.
CorrectionUse a clear practical name such as FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.
Limitation: This is not a universal TCS rule.
Complex design
Decorative layouts can reduce readability.
CorrectionUse clear headings, spacing and simple bullets.
Limitation: No format guarantees ATS success.
Tiny font
Important content becomes difficult to read.
CorrectionRemove irrelevant details before shrinking text.
Limitation: Two readable pages can be better than one unreadable page.
Spelling errors
They signal weak review and communication.
CorrectionProofread and read the final PDF.
Limitation: Automated grammar tools can miss context.
Long personal-details section
Sensitive and irrelevant details take space.
CorrectionKeep name, phone, email, city and useful links.
Limitation: Portal data belongs in the portal.
No interview preparation
Every resume line can create a question.
CorrectionPractise explaining skills, projects and dates.
Limitation: Memorised answers are not enough.
Keyword stuffing
Repeated terms reduce clarity and expose overclaiming.
CorrectionUse role keywords naturally with evidence.
Limitation: ATS websites do not represent TCS rules.
Paying a fake shortlisting agent
The payment can lead to fraud and identity theft.
CorrectionUse official TCS channels and report suspicious demands.
Limitation: No external agent can guarantee selection.
Every Resume Line Can Create a Question

Final Resume Checklist
FAQs on TCS Fresher Resume and Shortlisting
What resume format is suitable for TCS freshers?
Use a clean, readable and role-focused resume with accurate education, skills, projects and evidence. TCS does not publish one universal approved template.
Does a TCS fresher resume have to be one page?
No universal one-page requirement is published. One page is practical for many freshers, while two readable pages can suit genuine additional experience.
Should I add a photograph to my TCS resume?
Follow the exact drive instruction. A portal photo requirement does not automatically mean a photo should be inside the CV.
Should a fresher use an objective or professional summary?
A short professional summary is usually stronger when you have clear skills or projects. A focused objective can suit a genuine career transition.
Which skills should I add to a TCS resume?
Add only role-relevant skills that you can explain through projects, coursework, internship or substantial practice.
How many programming languages should I mention?
One strong primary language and one genuinely used supporting language are usually more credible than a long list.
How many projects should a fresher include?
Two or three relevant projects are usually enough when contribution and evidence are clear. There is no universal TCS project-count rule.
Can I add a college project to my resume?
Yes. Clearly mention the problem, technology, your contribution, testing and limitations.
Is GitHub compulsory for TCS?
No. GitHub is optional but useful when it contains clean, genuine and documented project work.
Are online certifications useful for a TCS resume?
Relevant and credible certifications can help when you understand the subject and can connect it with practical work.
What should I write when I have no internship?
Use genuine college projects, personal projects, coursework, hackathons, open-source work or technical volunteering.
Should I mention an academic gap in the resume?
Do not manipulate dates. Declare the gap where the application requires it and prepare an honest explanation.
Can a strong resume compensate for low marks?
A strong resume improves clarity but cannot override the academic eligibility of a specific drive.
Does TCS publish a fixed ATS score?
No universal TCS ATS score is published. Third-party ATS scores do not represent the TCS shortlisting process.
Which file format should I upload on NextStep?
Follow the current portal instruction for the exact drive. A PDF is practical only when that format is accepted.
What happens if my resume and NextStep details do not match?
The mismatch can create application or verification risk. Use the official correction route and keep documents consistent.
Can I update my CV after applying for a TCS drive?
Editing and CV replacement rules can differ by route and application status. Check the current portal and helpdesk instruction.
Does TCS charge money for resume shortlisting?
No. TCS says it does not ask for payment or security deposits during recruitment. Treat paid shortlist promises as fraud.
Final Recommendation
Keep the resume clean and match it with NextStep and documents. Mention only skills that you can explain through code, projects, coursework or internship.
Use genuine project contribution, keep certifications relevant and prepare for questions created by every important line.
Follow the current CV-upload instruction, avoid fake ATS scores, do not create duplicate profiles for minor corrections and never pay for shortlisting.
After an offer-related stage, the TCS Xplore guide explains why learning and onboarding are separate from the resume and hiring application.
