Why This SSC CGL Reasoning Book Was Created

SSC CGL reasoning does not require very long theory, but it requires clear methods and repeated practice. Students usually understand analogy, series or coding in class, but they become slow when the same concept is asked in a different form. Non-verbal reasoning also becomes difficult when students practise only verbal questions.

This book keeps the explanation short and then moves quickly to examples and practice. The purpose is not to make the chapter look difficult. The purpose is to make the method easy enough that you can recognise it inside the exam.

Original content note: The book is independently prepared educational material. It is not an official SSC publication and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Staff Selection Commission.

What You Get Inside the Book

Complete Coverage

145 Pages, 39 Chapters

Chapter 1

Semantic Analogy

Official syllabus link: Semantic Analogy

Semantic analogy checks whether you can identify the relationship between two words and apply the same relationship to another pair. SSC usually keeps the words familiar, but the relationship may be function, place, worker-tool, young-one, part-whole, cause-effect or degree.

Core method
  • Name the relationship before looking at options.
  • Keep the direction of the relation unchanged.
  • Reject options that are related but not in exactly the same way.
Solved example
Pen : Write :: Knife : ?
A. Milk B. Cut C. School D. Run
Answer: B. Cut
The relation is Pen is associated with Write; similarly Knife is associated with Cut.
Fast SSC Tip: Function and workplace relations are common and quick scoring. Try to solve the relation in one sentence.

Chapter 11

Coding and Decoding

Official syllabus link: Coding and de-coding

Coding-decoding tests whether you can infer a rule that converts letters, numbers, words or symbols into another form. Common SSC patterns use alphabet shifts, reverse order, position values, mixed operations and substitution codes.

Core method
  • Write A=1 to Z=26 only when needed.
  • Check forward/backward shift and reverse order first.
  • For sentence coding, use common-word/common-code matching.
Solved example
If WAVE is coded as XBWF, how will RING be coded?
A. SJOH B. SJNH C. HOJS D. TKPI
Answer: A. SJOH
Each letter is shifted forward by 1.
Fast SSC Tip: Test the inferred rule on every letter of the example before applying it.

Chapter 36

Direction and Distance

Official syllabus link: Space orientation / spatial orientation

Direction and distance is the most common text form of spatial orientation. It combines turns, movement, final direction and shortest distance.

Core method
  • Use N-E-S-W clockwise.
  • For shortest distance, use a right-triangle calculation when horizontal and vertical displacement remain.
  • Cancel opposite movements first.
Solved example
A person walks 4 m north and then 6 m east. In which direction is the person from the starting point?
A. North-West B. North-East C. South-West D. South-East
Answer: B. North-East
The final position combines north and east.
Fast SSC Tip: Reduce the path to net North-South and East-West movement.

Final Revision

Must-Remember Rules

The last part of the book gives a short revision sheet so you can revise repeated reasoning rules without reopening every chapter.

Quick revision sheet
  • Ranking: Total = Left rank + Right rank - 1.
  • Direction: cancel opposite movements before finding shortest distance.
  • Calendar: weekday cycle repeats every 7 days.
  • Clock: each hour mark = 30 degrees; minute hand moves 6 degrees per minute.
  • Syllogism: All A are B does not mean All B are A.
  • Mirror image reverses left-right; water image reverses top-bottom.
  • Paper folding: unfold in reverse order and mirror each punch/cut across the fold.
  • Series scan: difference -> second difference -> ratio -> alternating -> squares/cubes/primes.
Last-week rule: Revise your error notebook and weak chapters, and keep accuracy above random attempts.

How Every Chapter Is Written

Long theory can make reasoning feel more complicated than it is. That is why the chapters follow a simple learning sequence.

Step 1

Understand the Concept

First learn what the question is actually testing and which information matters.

Step 2

Learn the Short Method

Use a practical method that can be repeated under exam pressure.

Step 3

See Solved Examples

Examples explain why an answer is correct instead of giving only an option.

Step 4

Attempt Practice

Chapter questions test the same idea in different forms.

Step 5

Check Your Mistakes

Common traps are highlighted so the same error is not repeated.

Step 6

Move to Timed Sets

After topic clarity, use timed mixed practice for Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Preparation in One Book

The book is built around both stages instead of stopping after basic Tier 1 questions. Tier 1 requires fast recognition and controlled attempts. Tier 2 gives a separate reasoning module where accuracy becomes even more important because a wrong answer carries a higher penalty.

That is why the book first develops the concept, then gives chapter practice, and finally moves towards mixed timed sets. It helps a beginner start slowly while still giving a serious aspirant enough material for revision and speed practice.

Who Should Use This SSC CGL Reasoning Book?

This book is useful if you are preparing from the beginning, if reasoning is your weak section, or even if you already score well but want a single revision source before the exam.

Students starting SSC CGL Reasoning from zero
Students who know concepts but solve slowly
Students making repeated mistakes in coding, series or syllogism
Students weak in figure-based and non-verbal reasoning
Tier 1 students who need short timed practice
Tier 2 students who want accuracy-based revision
Self-study students preparing without coaching
Students who want one PDF for final reasoning revision

30-Day Study Plan with This Book

You do not need to finish the whole book in a few days. A simple monthly plan is better because reasoning improves through repetition.

Days 1-7

Direct Topics

Finish analogy, classification, series, coding, ranking, direction and blood relation.

Days 8-15

Logical Topics

Cover syllogism, Venn Diagram, inference, mathematical operations, word building and relationship-based questions.

Days 16-23

Visual Reasoning

Practise figure series, paper folding, pattern completion, embedded figures, mirror image, water image and spatial questions.

Days 24-30

Mock and Revision

Use mixed sets, revise the error notebook and practise within Tier 1 and Tier 2 reasoning timers.
