A college bonafide certificate is a document issued by your college or institution to confirm that you are genuinely studying there. Students may need it for a scholarship, education-related verification, internship paperwork, concession or another application where proof of current student status is requested. The exact format, documents and issuing process depend on your college, so the safest approach is to first check what the receiving organisation actually wants.
What Is a College Bonafide Certificate?
Think of it as a simple confirmation from the college: “Yes, this student is studying here.”
It is different from a marksheet because it normally does not prove your marks. It is different from an ID card because an outside organisation may specifically ask for an official signed or digitally issued certificate rather than a student card.
Where Is a Bonafide Certificate Used?
Do not request ten copies just because somebody says a bonafide is “important.” First know why you need it.
If you are applying for a scholarship, you can also use my NSP Scholarship registration and documents guide to understand how scholarship document requirements should be checked before uploading files.
What Documents Are Usually Needed to Apply?
There is no single national document list for every college bonafide certificate. Your institution may already have all your academic details in its student portal and ask for almost nothing, while another college may require an application and supporting copy.
How to Apply for a College Bonafide Certificate
Start by checking your college website or student portal. Many students directly write an application to the principal even when their institution has already moved certificate requests online.
Sample Bonafide Certificate Application for College
Use this only when your college accepts a written application. If your college provides its own form, use that form instead.

What Details Should a Bonafide Certificate Contain?
The exact wording depends on the issuing institution and the purpose. A scholarship-specific proforma may ask for more details than a general college bonafide.
BONAFIDE CERTIFICATE
This is to certify that [Student Name], Roll/Enrollment No. [Number], is a bonafide student of [College / Institute Name] and is currently studying in [Course, Year / Semester].
This certificate is issued on the student's request for [Purpose].

An official scholarship proforma can ask for details such as admission year, course duration, year of study, date of birth and recognition or affiliation information. That does not mean every ordinary bonafide needs all these fields.

Is a Bonafide Certificate Available in DigiLocker?
Do not assume that every college bonafide will be available in DigiLocker. DigiLocker availability depends on what the issuing institution has actually published through its supported digital system.
A college may issue a bonafide through its own ERP or student portal even when your marksheet and degree are available through DigiLocker.
For academic documents that are available digitally, my DigiLocker Documents for Students guide explains the difference between issuer-fetched documents and files you upload yourself.
How Long Is a Bonafide Certificate Valid?
There is no single universal validity period that should be applied to every bonafide certificate. The certificate records your status on or around its issue date, while the organisation receiving it may prescribe how recent the document must be.
For example, a scholarship may ask for a bonafide for the current academic session. Another purpose may only require a current certificate issued by the college.

Also keep the original file unchanged. If an application portal wants a smaller PDF or image, create a separate compressed copy instead of repeatedly editing your only original file.
College Bonafide Certificate FAQs
What is a college bonafide certificate?
It is an official certificate issued by a college or institution confirming that a person is genuinely enrolled or studying there. The exact fields and format depend on the institution and the purpose for which it is issued.
Why do students need a bonafide certificate?
It can be requested for purposes such as scholarships, internships, education-related verification, bank documentation, student concessions or another application requiring current institutional proof.
Which documents are required for a bonafide certificate?
Requirements differ by college. Commonly requested details can include a college ID, roll or enrollment number, application form, fee or admission record and the purpose of the request. Follow your institution's current checklist.
How do I apply for a bonafide certificate from college?
First check whether the college provides an online student-portal service. If not, follow the certificate office's process and submit the required form or written application with the requested supporting details.
Can I write an application to the principal for a bonafide certificate?
Yes, if your institution accepts written applications. Mention your name, course, year or semester, roll or enrollment number and the genuine purpose for which you require the certificate.
Is a college ID card the same as a bonafide certificate?
No. An ID card identifies you as a student, while a bonafide certificate is a formal institutional confirmation issued for a requested purpose. A receiving organisation can specifically require one and not accept the other.
How long is a bonafide certificate valid?
There is no single universal validity period. Check the receiving organisation's requirement because it may ask for a certificate from the current academic year, semester or a recent issue date.
Can I use an old bonafide certificate?
Only if the receiving authority accepts it. If the form requires current student status or the current academic session, apply for a fresh certificate.
Can I edit a bonafide certificate if a detail is wrong?
No. Ask the issuing college to correct and reissue the document. Do not manually change the name, date, course, signature or seal on an official certificate.
Is bonafide certificate compulsory for every scholarship?
No. Scholarship requirements differ by scheme. Some schemes specifically require a bonafide certificate while others use different admission or institutional verification. Always read the current scheme's document list.
Bihar Post Matric Scholarship 2026–27 lists Bonafide among the required student documents: Bihar PMS Official Portal
College of Commerce, Arts & Science, Patna provides a dedicated Bonafide Certificate application option through its student services: College Certificate Services
These are examples of current processes. Your own college and receiving organisation can prescribe a different form, document list or approval route.
Final Advice Before You Apply
A bonafide certificate is a simple document, but students create problems by using the wrong format, an old academic-year certificate or incorrect student details. Start with the requirement of the organisation asking for the certificate, then check your college's official issuing process.
Once you receive it, verify the name, course, year, issue date and authentication before submitting it. If anything is wrong, get it corrected by the college instead of editing the document yourself.
