College Bonafide Certificate: Uses, Documents & Application Guide

College Student Document Guide
College Bonafide Certificate Explained: Uses, Documents, Application & Common Problems

A college bonafide certificate is a document issued by your college or institution to confirm that you are genuinely studying there. Students may need it for a scholarship, education-related verification, internship paperwork, concession or another application where proof of current student status is requested. The exact format, documents and issuing process depend on your college, so the safest approach is to first check what the receiving organisation actually wants.

BONAFIDE Proof that you are a genuine student of the issuing institution.
SERVICE: STUDENT-CERTIFICATE
Process checked on 12 September 2026. Bonafide certificate procedures are not identical across Indian colleges. Some institutions provide an online student-portal application, while others still ask for a written application, ID card or supporting records. Always follow your own institution's current certificate process.

What Is a College Bonafide Certificate?

College Bonafide Certificate: Uses, Documents & Application Guide
Quick answer: A bonafide certificate is an official document from a college, university, school or institute confirming that the named person is genuinely enrolled or associated with that institution. For a college student, it commonly mentions details such as name, course, year or semester, roll or registration number and the period of study, depending on the institution's format.

Think of it as a simple confirmation from the college: “Yes, this student is studying here.”

It is different from a marksheet because it normally does not prove your marks. It is different from an ID card because an outside organisation may specifically ask for an official signed or digitally issued certificate rather than a student card.

Identity Your Name Confirms which student the certificate relates to.
Academic Course Can mention B.Tech, BCA, MCA, B.Com or another programme.
Status Current Study Confirms that you are a student of the institution for the stated period.
Institution Official Issue Usually carries authorised signature, seal or digital verification according to the institution's system.
02

Where Is a Bonafide Certificate Used?

Do not request ten copies just because somebody says a bonafide is “important.” First know why you need it.

01
Scholarship Applications Some scholarship schemes ask the student to prove that he or she is genuinely studying in the claimed institution.
02
Internship or Training Verification An organisation may ask for proof that an applicant is currently enrolled in college.
03
Education Loan or Bank Documentation A bank or financial institution may request current student-status proof as part of its own document checklist.
04
Travel or Student Concession Where a concession scheme requires institutional proof, the specified bonafide format may be requested.
05
Passport, Visa or Other Verification A receiving authority may sometimes request proof of current education. Submit a bonafide only when its current checklist actually asks for it.
06
Government or Private Forms Certain applications may need evidence of present course, institution, admission date or academic status.
Real current example: Bihar Post Matric Scholarship 2026–27 lists a bonafide certificate among the required student documents. This does not mean every scholarship uses the same format, so always read the scheme-specific document list.

If you are applying for a scholarship, you can also use my NSP Scholarship registration and documents guide to understand how scholarship document requirements should be checked before uploading files.

03

What Documents Are Usually Needed to Apply?

There is no single national document list for every college bonafide certificate. Your institution may already have all your academic details in its student portal and ask for almost nothing, while another college may require an application and supporting copy.

Student ID College Identity Card Useful for confirming your current student identity.
Academic ID Roll / Enrollment Number Copy the number exactly from your official college record.
Admission Fee Receipt Some institutions or schemes may use it as supporting current-admission proof.
Request Application Form Online request, printed form or written application depending on your college.
Purpose Reason / Supporting Notice If a specific organisation requires a particular format, keep that instruction with you.
Other Additional College Record Your institution may ask for registration details, semester information or no-dues depending on its process.
Do not upload documents just because they are available. Give only the documents your college or receiving authority asks for. Aadhaar, PAN and personal financial documents should not be shared unnecessarily.
04

How to Apply for a College Bonafide Certificate

Start by checking your college website or student portal. Many students directly write an application to the principal even when their institution has already moved certificate requests online.

STEP 01
Check the official college process Search the student portal, examination section, administration office or certificate-services page for “Bonafide Certificate.”
STEP 02
Confirm the purpose Know whether you need a general bonafide or a certificate in a specific scholarship, bank, internship or authority format.
STEP 03
Prepare your student details Keep your name, course, year, roll number, enrollment or registration number and other requested information ready.
STEP 04
Submit the application Complete the online form or submit the required written application to the designated office.
STEP 05
Save the request number If the portal gives an application or acknowledgement number, save it until the certificate is issued.
STEP 06
Check the certificate before using it Verify your name, course, year, date and issuing authority before uploading or submitting it anywhere.
Processing time is college-specific. Do not write “bonafide certificate always comes in 24 hours” in your planning. Some colleges issue it quickly, while another institution may have an approval queue or certificate office schedule. Apply before your scholarship or internship deadline.

Sample Bonafide Certificate Application for College

Use this only when your college accepts a written application. If your college provides its own form, use that form instead.

Simple Student Application

To
The Principal / Registrar / Concerned Officer
[College Name]

Subject: Request for Bonafide Certificate

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am [Your Name], a student of [Course Name], [Year/Semester], with Roll/Enrollment Number [Number]. I require a bonafide certificate for [mention the actual purpose, such as scholarship application / internship verification / education loan documentation].

Kindly issue the certificate with my current course and student details. I have attached the documents required by the college for this request.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
[Your Name]
Course: [Course]
Roll/Enrollment No.: [Number]
Mobile: [Number]
Date: [Date]

06

What Details Should a Bonafide Certificate Contain?

The exact wording depends on the issuing institution and the purpose. A scholarship-specific proforma may ask for more details than a general college bonafide.

Illustrative Structure Only

BONAFIDE CERTIFICATE

This is to certify that [Student Name], Roll/Enrollment No. [Number], is a bonafide student of [College / Institute Name] and is currently studying in [Course, Year / Semester].

This certificate is issued on the student's request for [Purpose].

Date: ______    Place: ______
Authorised Signature / Seal

An official scholarship proforma can ask for details such as admission year, course duration, year of study, date of birth and recognition or affiliation information. That does not mean every ordinary bonafide needs all these fields.

Never edit an issued certificate yourself. If your course, spelling, semester or another detail is wrong, ask the college to correct and reissue it. Editing the PDF or scan yourself can make the document unreliable.
07

Bonafide Certificate vs ID Card vs Fee Receipt

College Bonafide Formal Current-Student Confirmation Issued by the institution when an outside organisation or internal process requires official proof of student status.
Student ID Card Daily Campus Identity Useful for identifying you as a student, but an organisation may still specifically ask for a bonafide certificate.
Fee Receipt Proof of Fee Payment Shows a fee transaction or admission payment. It does not automatically replace a certificate confirming your complete current student status.
Admission Letter Proof of Admission Offer / Entry Shows admission-related information, while a current bonafide can confirm your ongoing institutional status.
Submit the document that is actually requested. If a scholarship portal says “Bonafide Certificate,” do not upload an ID card merely because both show the college name.
08

Is a Bonafide Certificate Available in DigiLocker?

Do not assume that every college bonafide will be available in DigiLocker. DigiLocker availability depends on what the issuing institution has actually published through its supported digital system.

A college may issue a bonafide through its own ERP or student portal even when your marksheet and degree are available through DigiLocker.

For academic documents that are available digitally, my DigiLocker Documents for Students guide explains the difference between issuer-fetched documents and files you upload yourself.

Digital does not mean unofficial. If your institution officially issues a digitally signed or portal-generated bonafide, follow the receiving organisation's instructions for downloading, printing or verifying it.
09

How Long Is a Bonafide Certificate Valid?

There is no single universal validity period that should be applied to every bonafide certificate. The certificate records your status on or around its issue date, while the organisation receiving it may prescribe how recent the document must be.

For example, a scholarship may ask for a bonafide for the current academic session. Another purpose may only require a current certificate issued by the college.

Do not assume “valid forever.” Before reusing an old bonafide, check whether the application asks for the current year, current semester or a certificate issued within a specified period.
10

Common Bonafide Certificate Problems and What to Do

Wrong Name
Your spelling is incorrect. Do not submit the certificate just because the deadline is close. Compare the college record with the identity or academic document relevant to the application and request correction.
Wrong Course
Course or semester is outdated. Ask the issuing office to update the student record or regenerate the certificate.
Old Certificate
The receiving portal wants the current academic year. Apply for a fresh certificate instead of editing the date on an old copy.
No Purpose
Your college asks why you need it. State the real purpose briefly. If the receiving body has a prescribed format, attach or show that instruction.
Portal Pending
Your online request is stuck. Keep the application/reference number and contact the certificate office or official help desk instead of submitting duplicate requests repeatedly.
Rejected Upload
The scholarship or application rejected the file. Check file format, size, current academic year, signature/seal, student details and whether the portal requires a prescribed bonafide format.
No Seal
The receiving authority wants authenticated issue. Do not add a stamp yourself. Ask the institution whether the certificate should have a physical seal, digital signature or portal verification.
College Closed
You are a former student and need an old bonafide. Check whether your university, registrar or old-student portal handles former-student certificates. The process can differ from current students.
11

Before You Submit the Certificate Anywhere

1 Name Match the spelling required by the application.
2 Course Check programme, year or semester.
3 Issue Date Confirm it satisfies any current-year or recency requirement.
4 Authentication Check signature, seal or digital verification where required.

Also keep the original file unchanged. If an application portal wants a smaller PDF or image, create a separate compressed copy instead of repeatedly editing your only original file.

FAQ

College Bonafide Certificate FAQs

What is a college bonafide certificate?

It is an official certificate issued by a college or institution confirming that a person is genuinely enrolled or studying there. The exact fields and format depend on the institution and the purpose for which it is issued.

Why do students need a bonafide certificate?

It can be requested for purposes such as scholarships, internships, education-related verification, bank documentation, student concessions or another application requiring current institutional proof.

Which documents are required for a bonafide certificate?

Requirements differ by college. Commonly requested details can include a college ID, roll or enrollment number, application form, fee or admission record and the purpose of the request. Follow your institution's current checklist.

How do I apply for a bonafide certificate from college?

First check whether the college provides an online student-portal service. If not, follow the certificate office's process and submit the required form or written application with the requested supporting details.

Can I write an application to the principal for a bonafide certificate?

Yes, if your institution accepts written applications. Mention your name, course, year or semester, roll or enrollment number and the genuine purpose for which you require the certificate.

Is a college ID card the same as a bonafide certificate?

No. An ID card identifies you as a student, while a bonafide certificate is a formal institutional confirmation issued for a requested purpose. A receiving organisation can specifically require one and not accept the other.

How long is a bonafide certificate valid?

There is no single universal validity period. Check the receiving organisation's requirement because it may ask for a certificate from the current academic year, semester or a recent issue date.

Can I use an old bonafide certificate?

Only if the receiving authority accepts it. If the form requires current student status or the current academic session, apply for a fresh certificate.

Can I edit a bonafide certificate if a detail is wrong?

No. Ask the issuing college to correct and reissue the document. Do not manually change the name, date, course, signature or seal on an official certificate.

Is bonafide certificate compulsory for every scholarship?

No. Scholarship requirements differ by scheme. Some schemes specifically require a bonafide certificate while others use different admission or institutional verification. Always read the current scheme's document list.

Official examples checked while preparing this guide:

Bihar Post Matric Scholarship 2026–27 lists Bonafide among the required student documents: Bihar PMS Official Portal

College of Commerce, Arts & Science, Patna provides a dedicated Bonafide Certificate application option through its student services: College Certificate Services

These are examples of current processes. Your own college and receiving organisation can prescribe a different form, document list or approval route.

Final Advice Before You Apply

A bonafide certificate is a simple document, but students create problems by using the wrong format, an old academic-year certificate or incorrect student details. Start with the requirement of the organisation asking for the certificate, then check your college's official issuing process.

Once you receive it, verify the name, course, year, issue date and authentication before submitting it. If anything is wrong, get it corrected by the college instead of editing the document yourself.
